SWISCA AG is advancing its plans for a new facility in the Nordhalden area of Herisau, following the conclusion of a design competition that selected a proposal by Meier Hug Architects. The winning design, chosen unanimously by a jury representing the construction sector, local authorities, and the company, aims to blend industrial functionality with sustainable construction principles while supporting SWISCA’s future growth.
The new development represents a significant investment in Herisau’s industrial landscape. The selected architectural concept stood out for its successful integration into the site’s challenging terrain and for its clear, contemporary industrial design language. A key feature of the project is a glass-fronted “school mill,” which will serve as a visible symbol of the company’s technological expertise and training-oriented approach.
Inside, the building is designed for operational efficiency. A large assembly hall supported by only five columns will provide wide, flexible space for production and logistics. The overall layout prioritizes short internal routes, natural light, and strong visual connections to the surrounding environment.
“With this new building, we are bringing ‘Next Generation’ to life,” said SWISCA AG CEO Heinz Brand. “We are increasing our efficiency, expanding customer value through training and technology courses, and creating sustainable, attractive jobs in the region.”
Sustainability is a central component of the project. According to Michael Meier of Meier Hug Architects, the plan places equal emphasis on ecological and architectural development. Geothermal energy, photovoltaic systems, green outdoor areas, recycled steel, and CO₂-optimized concrete are among the measures incorporated into the design.
Local authorities have also expressed strong support. “It is great to see the project progressing,” said Herisau municipal president Max Eugster. “SWISCA is the ideal partner. The project aligns with the municipal development plan and fits well with the existing industrial architecture of our community. And of course, we welcome the approximately 200 jobs that will be created.”
Meier Hug Architects are currently working on the preliminary project phase, expected to conclude in summer 2026. Construction is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2027.
