COFCO International has shipped the first large-scale cargo of Brazilian sorghum to China from its STS11 terminal at the Port of Santos. The shipment followed the receipt of final phytosanitary clearance from Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA).
The bulk carrier Guo Yuan 26 departed the Port of Santos carrying approximately 69,000 tonnes of sorghum. The shipment marks the first export of Brazilian sorghum to China and the opening of a new agricultural trade flow between the two countries.
The export follows the entry into force of the phytosanitary protocol for Brazilian sorghum exports to China, signed by Brazil and China in November 2024.
The vessel is expected to arrive at Nansha Port in Guangzhou after a voyage of approximately 45 days. Following its arrival, the sorghum will be distributed by COFCO Trading.
New Market Opportunity for Brazilian Farmers
The new export channel is expected to create additional demand for Brazilian sorghum while providing farmers with greater access to international markets and new opportunities to capture more value from their production.
The shipment represents a new development in agricultural trade between Brazil and China and could contribute to the expansion of export opportunities for Brazilian agricultural commodities.
