Brazil Strengthens Agricultural Partnerships in Strategic European Mission

Representatives of the Brazilian government have concluded a significant diplomatic mission across Europe, engaging with key partners in Brussels and Rome to reinforce Brazil's position as a leading global food supplier while advancing discussions on sustainability and international trade agreements.

The delegation, led by Luís Rua, Secretary of Trade and International Relations, began its agenda in Brussels with high-level meetings aimed at strengthening Brazil-EU agricultural cooperation. Rua met with Brazilian Ambassador to the EU Pedro Miguel and Elli Tsiforou, Secretary-General of COPA-COGECA, Europe's most influential agricultural organization. Their discussions focused on the long-pending EU-Mercosur trade agreement, food security policies, and Brazil's commitment to sustainable production practices.

A highlight of the Brussels visit was Rua's participation in the "Forum for the Future of Agriculture," the continent's premier sustainable farming event. Addressing an audience of over 1,000 in-person and 3,000 virtual attendees, the secretary emphasized Brazil's progress in reducing deforestation while increasing agricultural output, positioning the country as a key player in global food security.

The mission continued with technical meetings at the European Commission, where Rua engaged with directors from both the Agriculture and Rural Development (DG-AGRI) and Health and Food Safety (DG-Santé) departments. These talks addressed critical trade issues including market access barriers, sanitary regulations, and joint initiatives to combat rural migration trends.

In Rome, the focus shifted to multilateral cooperation as Rua participated in the "Brazil and Italy - Dialogue on Sustainable Agriculture" symposium. The event showcased Brazilian innovations in sustainable farming and highlighted mutual benefits expected from the EU-Mercosur agreement.

At FAO headquarters, the Brazilian delegation held a series of strategic meetings. Discussions with Deputy Director Beth Bechdol centered on bio-input technologies and deforestation reduction strategies. Chief Economist Maximo Torero and Secretary Rua examined progress on the Global Alliance Against Hunger, while talks with Animal Health Director Thanawat Tiensin focused on sustainable livestock practices and trade facilitation measures.

The mission, which included agricultural attachés and representatives from ApexBrasil, concluded with strengthened partnerships and clearer pathways for Brazil's agricultural exports. By aligning with international sustainability standards and reinforcing its commitment to food security, Brazil has taken significant steps toward consolidating its leadership in global agri-food systems.
