As of May 9, 2025, Ukrainian farmers have successfully sown 4.32 million hectares of spring grains and pulses, covering 76% of the forecasted sowing area. The progress reflects stable agricultural momentum across the country, with many regions nearing full completion of their planting targets.
Corn remains the dominant crop, already planted on 2.9 million hectares, representing 73% of the projected area. Other major crops also show strong progress: spring barley covers 733.4 thousand hectares (94%), spring wheat 212.6 thousand hectares (93%), peas 208.9 thousand hectares (96%), and oats 157 thousand hectares (97%).
However, buckwheat and millet are lagging behind, with sowing completed on only 16.3 thousand hectares (18%) and 15.7 thousand hectares (20%) respectively.
Several regions stand out for their high sowing rates. The Poltava region leads with 509.7 thousand hectares under spring crops, including 423.2 thousand hectares of corn. The Kirovohrad region follows with 352 thousand hectares, while Chernihiv and Cherkasy regions report 349.7 and 339.8 thousand hectares respectively. The Sumy region has also made notable progress with 294.3 thousand hectares sown.
In addition to grains and pulses, Ukrainian farmers have planted 5.2 million hectares of technical crops. Sunflower leads this segment with 3.5 million hectares sown, accounting for 69% of the planned area. Dnipropetrovsk region tops the list for sunflower sowing with 446.5 thousand hectares. Soybean planting has reached 1.3 million hectares (55.9%), while sugar beet sowing is nearly complete with 217.1 thousand hectares (99%).
Overall, Ukraine plans to plant approximately 5.7 million hectares of spring grains and pulses in 2025, maintaining the same level as the previous year. A key feature of this season is an increase in the area allocated to spring wheat, which is expected to reach 227.5 thousand hectares. This adjustment reflects steady demand from both milling companies and exporters, signaling ongoing confidence in Ukraine's grain market.
