Grains Australia has published its list of wheat varieties for 2026–2027

Grains Australia has published the Wheat Variety Master List for the 2026–2027 season, announcing the existing and new varieties approved under Australia’s wheat classification process. The list, which came into effect on 1 August 2026, sets out the highest classification levels that can be applied in different regions.

Eight varieties have been classified in the new list. Six of these fall into the Australian Hard (AH) class and two into the Australian Noodle Wheat (ANW) class. In addition, a new feed variety named ULTIM8 has been added to the list. The newly classified varieties are listed as AGT-AGILE, AGT-GLAMOUR CL PLUS, AGT-TRIGG, IG COLLIE, IG QUOKKA, KESTREL, LRPB HURDLE and PACKER.

The classifications of some existing varieties were also upgraded depending on the region. In the Western region, AGT Colt and Sunmaster were upgraded to the AH class, whilst in the Southern region, LRPB Optimus, LRPB SONIC and Mowhawk were upgraded to the AH class; AGT-Rimfire was reclassified into the ADR class. In the South Eastern region, AGT Colt, AGT Hamelin, Dale, RGT Healy and RGT Ponsford were upgraded to the AH class, whilst AGT Kudos was upgraded to the APH class. In the Northern region, AGT Colt was upgraded to the AH class.

Dr Megan Sheehy, General Manager of Classification at Grains Australia, stated that the list was published to support the global competitiveness of Australian wheat and to maintain the quality standards required by the sector. Sheehy also noted that the organisation continues to work with the Wheat Council and the sector to develop a market-driven classification system that takes customer demands into account and supports producers’ profitability.

Following consultations with the sector, 11 varieties have been removed from the new list. These varieties were initially flagged for removal in 2024 and had continued to be delivered under the existing grades until 2025.

Due to falling production thresholds, five varieties are scheduled to be removed from the list in 2027. Harper, King Rock, Kiora, LRPB Viking and Mitch are among these varieties. Furthermore, 15 varieties – namely Impress CL Plus, Hydra, Cosmick, Sunlamb, Hatchet CL Plus, Bremer, DS Newton, DS Darwin, Heckto, Ovalo, Jade, Tenfour, B53, Yitpi and Chara – are scheduled to be removed from the list in 2028.

Grains Australia, an initiative of the Grains Research and Development Corporation, is carrying out work to improve market access across the grain value chain and to strengthen the alignment between production and market needs. Whilst the grades on the Master List indicate the highest grade achievable for varieties in the relevant regions, at the time of delivery, varieties are also assessed against the Grain Trade Australia (GTA) Wheat Standards applicable for each season.
