Alapala, a global leader in grain milling technologies, has been awarded the prestigious German Innovation Award 2025 for its next-generation roller mill, Similago II. The award, presented by the German Design Council on behalf of the German Federal Government, recognises groundbreaking products that set new standards through user-focused innovation, advanced engineering, and measurable industry impact.
Developed in collaboration with the renowned Italian design firm Italdesign, Similago II stands out with its seamless integration of high-end technology, energy efficiency, and operational excellence. The roller mill is engineered for the high-capacity processing of wheat, maize, rye, and other cereals, with a chassis made from high-carbon steel that significantly reduces vibration—ensuring stable and consistent performance in demanding industrial settings.
One of the most remarkable features of Similago II is its aerodynamic structure, designed to prevent internal overheating. The lubrication-free and silent belt drive system not only extends the product’s service life but also contributes to a safer and cleaner working environment.
The German Innovation Award jury praised the Similago II for its “precision finish” and full compliance with the strict hygiene requirements of the food industry. The use of stainless steel components and practical features—such as removable polycarbonate inspection panels—enable quick and effective cleaning, making it ideal for continuous industrial use.
At the heart of Similago II’s innovation is the EZ Roll Pack Change System, which enables roll changes in just 20 minutes using standard tools—without the need for any lifting equipment. This system dramatically reduces downtime and enhances plant productivity.
Additionally, the roller mill is equipped with a 7-inch LCD touchscreen panel that allows operators to monitor feed rates, motor loads, energy consumption, and system alarms in real time. This level of transparency and control improves user experience and ensures maximum operational efficiency.
Italdesign’s involvement in the project brought a new dimension to the roller mill’s design. Known for its work across the automotive and consumer electronics industries, Italdesign’s collaboration with Alapala has yielded a machine that not only performs with precision but also delivers an elevated user interface and long-term reliability.
The German Innovation Award 2025 reaffirms Alapala’s commitment to innovation, quality, and sustainability in industrial milling. Similago II is more than a roller mill—it is a forward-thinking solution tailored for the demands of today’s global grain processing industry.
